WHO IS SANTA MONICA?

Good things happen when passions collide. In this case – photography and public policy.

One project this summer involved crafting the story of the City of Santa Monica’s civic highlights in 2011-2012.  There was no shortage of success stories. The organization represents the most innovative efforts among cities on the Pacific rim in fiscal management, urban growth and sustainability in everyday life.

I learned a lot about people, cities and the attention to detail required to execute a project of this size and scope.

Working with the many people involved in the report broadened my creative process, especially working with Helen Kim at The Think Farm. She designed the year end report. With grace, thoughtful design and unshakable professionalism Helen raised the level of civic pride in Santa Monica. You did it Helen.

Over 2,000 printed copies of the report were distributed to residents and businesses in Santa Monica. The report is also available on the City’s website.

Here are some snap shots of the report:

TYPHA TO THE SKY

I present to you a photograph and haiku.

Cat-tails to the sky
Rock and moss wait, wondering
Can we touch those tips?

BLUE LAKES ROAD

On rare occasion inspiration turns the camera for a self portrait.  These two shots were taken just south of Lake Tahoe, California.  I spent the morning fly fishing on the head waters of the blue lakes river where tributary glaciers in a former epoch carved out this vast meadow.  Today shallow lakes and feeble streams are hidden by the tall grasses and sedges.  Still, a pleasant sight on the eyes.  Enjoy.

T-SHIRTS: TAKE ONE

Miami.  Sunshine.  Artists and friends.  Why not make some t-shirts?

A close friend and talented metal artist Matt Horowitz cut our logo with a high pressured water jet machine.  I spray painted the logo on some shirts.  It sort of worked out despite peak August humidity.  Thanks for the stencil Matt.  Looking good Kate and Sam.  You wear those shirts well.

STEADY ON STILTS

I met Ialtus in Miami this past Spring.  Ialtus is a Cuban farmer.  He moves across the countryside on stilts and lives a life of great humility, one closely connected to his environment.  His life is simple.  In this simplicity exists wisdom uncommon to us urban aboriginals.

“Ialtus” is a fictional character from Enrique Sendra’s wild imagination.   Sendra is an up and coming painter in Miami, FL.  His herculean talents are unmistakable.  Here is an article about Sendra recently published in the Miami Herald.

This Friday, August 12th, from 7-10p, Sendra’s exhibition “Cross Pollinated Signals” opens in the swenson gallery at the Bakehouse art complex in Wynwood, Miami.  Come check out Sendra’s work.
